I also saw an amazingly green Hurican and a black SLS.

I think the Mercedes is a daily driver; I saw it while vacationing in San Francisco, and someone from Hooniverse caught it in action.

220S fintail is on original plates too, cool. Looks like an early range for the plates, the car is likely 1963-64 then.

Yeah I’ve seen her, the interior is kind of trashed, it smokes a bit. But she does seem to DD it and check her lipstick a lot.

If I could find one in decent shape, decent price, that was maintained I might swap it for my W123.

It was pretty awesome seeing it parked in Union Square, surrounded by trust fund babies and rich tourists trying to be foodies.

Yup. Here’s the Hooniverse picture, in an entirely different area; you can see the Oakland Bay Bridge in the background:

That’s the issue, maintenance - they are all pretty old cars now, all of them 15-20 years older than 123s. MB also wasn’t a perfect rust-proofer, and some areas of the car can get a little rot in any climate, especially sills, and trunk wells. They aren’t terribly expensive, but I think there’s a slight upward trend lately, as there are few roadworthy ones remaining, especially higher spec W111s.
I have a 220SE I have had since I was 18. It’s an unrestored car with plenty of little needs, but it has been very reliable and is always a pleasure to drive. It’s a Sunday driver now, and will likely stay original for the foreseeable future, as restoration costs are astronomical.

Yeah I almost got a ponton once but I looked into costs and its nuts! My 300D is a pretty good compromise, still has some classic looks. My Merc mechanic has a black over red fin and it’s sweet.

A 123 or 126 is probably the best compromise - classic looks, huge quality, but still usable as an everyday car.
I’ve guesstimated a modest/moderate restoration (non-specialist) would run about 40K, and a lot more if I sent it to the Classic Center or similar.

Yeah, well I’ve spent 20k at least on the Z and those parts are plentiful and reasonable,

Fintail parts are usually plentiful as you can still get a lot from MB, and there are used parts specialists. Not all parts are always reasonable. I haven’t spent 20K in 20 years on that old car.
My guesstimate was 15K for body paint and trim, 15K for engine, 10K for interior and incidentals - and even then it would be what I call “local show” quality, not maker-perfect. And even then, I wouldn’t want to drive it in fear of damage. Unrestored cars are sometimes better.
